Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome on Wednesday missed a high-profile Senate plenary session, citing medical reasons following recent eye surgery. Her absence comes as the Senate intensifies scrutiny over her ministry’s handling of a recent controversy involving the reported disappearance of over 360 title deeds.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi informed the House that Wahome, who reportedly suffered severe eye swelling post-surgery, notified him of her inability to attend just hours before her scheduled appearance. Kingi shared that the message had come through Lands Principal Secretary Nixon Korir, sparking questions among lawmakers about the timing of her notification and whether she could have informed them earlier.
“We expected CS Wahome to respond to pressing matters today, particularly the disturbing loss of over 360 title deeds and inconsistencies in recent Ministry statements,” Kingi stated, addressing the House. "Her absence without prior notice only adds to the concerns raised by this House.”
Wahome was expected to answer key questions surrounding a Gazette notice that revealed the title deed mix-up, a disclosure that has ignited public concern and calls for transparency. The Senate has yet to confirm a rescheduled date for Wahome’s appearance but emphasized the urgency of addressing the contentious land matters impacting Kenyan citizens.
