"Black Tuesday": The Night Githurai and Zimmerman Endured Police Brutality.

After a dramatic day when Kenyans attempted to occupy and block all roads leading to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), a night of violence and bloodshed unfolded as residents of Kamiti Road endured brutal police attacks.

Trouble ignited when protesters lit bonfires at various junctions along Kamiti Road, including the Kahawa West roundabout, the Northern Bypass flyover, around Small Villa in Githurai 44, and at Base and Mirema in Zimmerman Estate. These bonfires raged on throughout the afternoon, with hundreds of youths staging demonstrations that brought movement along Kamiti Road to a standstill.

Motorists along the Northern Bypass, from Marurui towards Kahawa West and beyond, were forced to navigate bushy routes to connect back to Kamiti Road around Jacaranda Estate. In Githurai 44, areas around Small Villa and Uncle Sam were impassable, prompting residents to shut down their businesses as they braced for a day of running battles with the police.

By 6 p.m., the full force of the police was unleashed on Githurai 44. Officers patrolled in large numbers, beating and arresting protesters, and even using live ammunition. Businesses quickly closed across Githurai 44 as police lobbed teargas into homes and kiosks to flush out protesters. Eyewitnesses reported seeing police shooting indiscriminately and stopping young men, ordering them to kneel, and hauling them into waiting lorries.

A resident who witnessed the events from his balcony recounted, "The police were ruthless. They didn't care who was in their way. It was terrifying to see them shoot and beat people so mercilessly."

Videos recorded by Githurai 44 residents show school buses caught in the melee, with tear gas forming thick clouds that invaded narrow streets and homes. The night of June 25, now referred to as 'Black Tuesday,' saw residents of Githurai 45 enduring a hellish ordeal as police heartlessly terrorized the estate for hours.

Despite the overwhelming digital evidence of the horrors that unfolded that night, the government has remained silent, failing to comment publicly on the Githurai horrors. It remains unclear what exactly transpired that night and who was responsible. The Zimmerman catastrophe may also go unmentioned, with no repercussions for the officers involved.

As one resident lamented, "It's disheartening to think that such brutality can occur, and yet there’s no accountability. The scars of that night will never leave us."

While the physical evidence of that night may fade, the digital evidence will remain online, a haunting reminder of the unspeakable horrors endured by the residents of Nairobi's Githurai and Zimmerman estates.
